Animal Parade Beginning

The Animal Parade is one of the 7 Magical Events and consists of a series of animals which march past in twos similar to Noah's Ark. It was first shown in the very first episode Ned's Bicycle, making it also the first Magical Event to appear.

Synopsis[]

Animals

An Original Colouring Page from the Teletubbies 1998 Annual (with Colours)

The sketch starts with The Magic Windmill spinning a bit longer than usual. The Teletubbies then arrive silently at the Magic Event place in Teletubbyland. The Sun starts to giggle and laugh. The Teletubbies then hear the sound of an elephant's trumpet, and so they venture off to the destination of the Magical Event (in some episodes, it’s cut off or it’s not heard). The Teletubbies walk up a hill, they then gasp as they get to the top of the hill and see a group of (safari/exotic) animals. There are nine types of --safari/exotic-- animals marching in the distance two by two (similar to the Bible story Noah's Ark). (There are exotic animals from various continents and countries including the continents Africa, North America, South America, and Asia. The exception is the penguins which lives in Antarctica.) Like in the Bible story of Noah's Ark, each of these animals are male and female. As the Teletubbies watch the animals, it is revealed they are in a parade. The camera then cuts to a path in a field where we see the animals close up. The tune changes like the sounds of each animal, loud and dramatic for the tigers and the giraffes, slow and low for the elephants and the tortoises, a slow, high-pitched African-like tune for snakes, a quick waddling tune for the penguins, soft and sweet for the flamingos and the butterflies, and a quick nature tune for the frogs. The animals continue to march through Teletubbyland in twos while the tune plays until the camera cuts to a faraway view of a hill. The animals march up the hill, the tune then ends and the animals fade away. And then the Magic Windmill stops spinning or the Baby Sun giggles.

Trivia[]

  • This was the first Magical Event.
  • This was a very popular sketch with the children when it aired.
  • In Ned's Bicycle and Balancing, and the US Version of Our Dog Alice, the scene of the Teletubbies listening to the Elephant's trumpet is cut. However, in the US version of Our Dog Alice, after the Teletubbies arrive, the elephant trumpet is heard and then cuts to the event.
  • In Ned's Bicycle, Balancing, Mandir Temple, Rollerblading, Cows and Calves, Kittens, Spiders, Twirlers, Piglets, Cat's Night Out, Handshapes - Turkey and Animal Rhythms, when the Teletubbies are listening for a sound before running off, the Elephant's trumpet is not heard.
  • In Ned's Bicycle, Making Flowers, Balancing, Tweet Tweet, Twirlers, and the US Version of Carnival, a fade effect is used to transition to the Windmill stopping.
  • In Balancing and Piglets, the Teletubbies do not gasp when they arrive at the top of the hill.
  • In Giraffes, Feeding the Monkeys, Asian Storyteller, and the US Versions of Our Dog Alice and Animal Rhythms, the Sun Baby giggles for Tubby Bye-Bye after the magical event.
  • There was an Animal Parade web game on the CBeebies website where you matched up the animals.
  • In the 1998 Teletubbies Annual, a colouring page for The Animal Parade was seen, with some animals missing (e.g.: flamingos and frogs)
  • When the animals are shown marching through Teletubbyland, there is a tree in the background moving a lot.
  • Some of the animals walk/stomp over the flowers.
  • The flamingos are the only animals shown in the introduction and the end of the event, probably because they were the fifth pair of animals to appear (therefore, they were in the middle).
  • The giraffes' fast-paced walking made them walk off-screen just a few seconds after the tortoises. Although this would mean that the giraffes would have been ahead of the tortoises, in the ending, the giraffes are shown to be still rather far away from the tortoises.
  • When the animals are shown arriving and later marching away, it is the same hill and area, but it is just mirrored.
  • The animal sounds used are from the "EMU Proteus 3 World" sound font "Jungle Book".
  • The music for this event appears on the Teletubbies CD. It's an alternate mix, as a few instruments were added, while some others were removed.
  • As Asian elephants are fully gray, the elephants that appear in the Animal Parade are Asian elephants.
  • There are two types of Asian animals (tigers and Asian elephants), four types of African animals (African snakes, Greater flamingoes, African spurred tortoises, and giraffes), and three types of animals from the Americas (Humboldt/Galapagos penguins, butterflies, and North American green frogs).
    • While most penguins (in reality) are native to Antarctica, the Humboldt and Galapagos penguins are two of the few penguins which live outside of Antarctica.
    • Africa is seen the most often. That is, being the animals African snakes (possibly an African Rock Python), Greater flamingoes, African spurred tortoises, and giraffes. All four of these animals are native to Africa.
    • Strangely, the three other continents out of the seven --for (exotic/safari/zoo) animals-- are ignored/not used (including Europe, Australia, and Antarctica) and only the previous four are used (including Africa, North America, South America, and Asia).

Goofs[]

  • In the opening scene, you can see the penguins the second time the tigers appear and the penguins are gone until the parade starts.
  • When the animals are first seen coming and when they leave it is dusk but during the parade it is midday.
  • The animals walking speed is different from their real life animal counterparts.
