TBB - No

The Teletubbies sadly groaning during the start of Tubby Bye Bye (Classic Series)

Tubby Bye-Bye is the ending sequence of every Teletubbies episode. There are two things that signify the start of Tubby Bye-Bye, like when The Magic Windmill stops spinning, even if there's no Magical Events, or the Baby Sun giggles, unless that would move on to another scene.

A Voice Trumpet rises and announces "Time for Tubby Bye-Bye!" 3 times. The Teletubbies (who are standing behind some hills) sadly start to groan and say "No", because they don't want to say goodbye. After the Baby Sun giggles, the Teletubbies theme plays on a piano and glockenspiel in C major, and the narrator says "Bye-Bye" to each Teletubby in order. Then the Teletubbies (one by one) duck behind the hills. With the Teletubbies "gone", the show (at first sight), seems to be over, until the Teletubbies silently giggle.

The Teletubbies try to get to having the show go on again and avoid having to say goodbye, despite hearing that it's time say goodbye from the voice trumpet and the narrator who have announced that it's time. This is done by (unsuccessfully) outsmarting the "Tubby Bye Bye" sequence.

So therefore, trying to outsmart the "Tubby Bye Bye" sequence, a random Teletubby pops out saying "Boo!". It's then followed by the others who all say "Boo!" as well. The Teletubbies (who still do not like saying goodbye) then giggle again. When the Teletubbies giggle, the show (at second sight), then seems to go on again with the Teletubbies thinking they do not have to "say goodbye" just so they can keep playing and continue the episode.

They happily giggle because they think that "Tubby Bye-Bye" is a game. But before any more steps from the Teletubbies are taken (like finding a way to avoid and/or cancel "Tubby Bye-Bye"), the narrator stops them in vain and just in time and says a big, long "No" in response, which the Teletubbies respond back by mimicking his "No" and giggle again. The narrator saying "No" is really meant to remind the Teletubbies that "Tubby Bye Bye" is not a game, and it's really time to say goodbye.

Then, after the Baby Sun giggles again, the narrator (who hopes the Teletubbies are going to listen and obey this time) decides to try again, and says "Bye-Bye" to each Teletubby in order again. When he says "Bye-bye" to the Teletubbies for the second time, the Teletubbies Theme plays again (this time with more instruments and in E Major). This is the same as the first time, but the Teletubbies are serious this time. Therefore, the Teletubbies make a good choice, by staying gone.

The Baby Sun sets in the sky. The female voiceover says this goodbye rhyme "The sun is setting in the sky. Teletubbies say goodbye (bye-bye in reboot)". The Teletubbies, disappointed but obedient, bid farewell to the viewers. One by one, the Teletubbies, starting with the boo shouter, walk up to the top of the Tubbytronic Superdome and say “Bye-Bye” before jumping into the hole.

As the credits roll from the right to the left, one Teletubby, the one that shouted “Boo!” earlier, says goodbye for a final time by popping out of the hole, then ducking back down into the house. And as the show ends, they go back to the Tubbytronic Superdome while the Sun sets. The setting Baby Sun disappears behind the hills and refecting in the sky with red sunset light with the blue sky gets darker (before becoming night time) and the episode ends before the blue sky gets completely dark.

Teletubbies sadly groaning during the start of Tubby Bye-Bye (Reboot Series)

In the Reboot, there are some minor differences in Tubby Bye-Bye.

  • The Reboot episodes always end with the windmill stop spinning.
  • When the Voice Trumpet rises and announces 'Time for Tubby Bye-Bye', it only says it 2 times.
  • After the Teletubbies duck down behind the hills, they do not giggle. Then when the Teletubby pops up to say boo, their signature instrument plays a small music cue. Tinky Winky=Tuba, Dipsy=Marimba, Laa-Laa=Trumpet and Po=Piano
  • After the Narrator and the Teletubbies go 'Noooooo.', Instead of saying 'Bye-Bye' to each Teletubby again, the Narrator says 'Bye-Bye Teletubbies' and all 4 Teletubbies at the same time say 'Bye-Bye' and they all duck down behind the hills together at the same time.
  • The Teletubbies say 'Bye Bye' and jump in the hole of the Tubbytronic Superdome, always in their normal order: Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and, Po. The Teletubby that says 'Bye-Bye' for the final time is always different from the boo shouter (the only episodes where they are the same are the colour episodes Red, Purple and Yellow).

Trivia

  • Whenever Laa-Laa is the boo shouter, the Teletubbies' voices are redubbed, but for episodes with the other Teletubbies as the boo shouter, the same audio is used. In the Reboot, the Teletubbies voices' always have different audio no matter who the boo shouter is.
  • In the Teletubbies Videos (except for Teletubbies and the Snow and Ready Steady Go!) and on PBS Kids (the American version), all four Teletubbies pop out of the hole to say 'Bye-Bye!' for the final time at the end of the episode.
  • Most of the videos, such as Here Come the Teletubbies, Dance with the Teletubbies, and Nursery Rhymes, have the Tubby Bye-Bye Tune with the Xylophone, Bassoon and Piano playing when all four Teletubbies pop up to say goodbye at the very end of the video. Some of the videos, such as Uh-Oh! Messes and Muddles, Big Hug! and Musical Playtime along with the American and foreign language releases, have the tune but without these instruments.
  • The Windmill is seen in its Start/Stop Spinning animation with the ground when the Teletubbies jump into the Superdome, spinning slowly without sparkles.
  • When Po is the boo shouter, the Teletubbies are silent until Po says 'Boo!'.
  • In the Reboot Series, when the Teletubbies are behind the hills, Laa-Laa and Po are switched places and are more closer to the camera, whilst Tinky-Winky and Dipsy are closer to each other behind the same hill.
  • In the PBS Kids (US) version, a female narrator is in the Voice Trumpet, and Rolf Saxon does the narration, says the closing rhyme, and signs off to the Teletubbies. Also, before the main credits roll, a message appears plugging the website, as all PBS Kids shows do: "To Find Out More About Teletubbies: PBS Online at www.pbs.org". In later airings, the message read "To Find Out More About Teletubbies: PBS Online at pbskids.org or America Online Keyword: PBS Kids".
  • There is also a snowy version of the Tubby Bye-Bye segment used in the snow themed episodes. There are some differences between this version and the normal version. The Voice Trumpet rising was re-shot, while the rest of the segment has snow added to the ground.
  • There are 4 episodes where the Teletubbies don't groan or sadly say no when it's time to say goodbye and just run out of the house. Those episodes are Herding Sheep, Numbers - 9, How Things Swim And Numbers - 2 (V2).
  • There are 3 episodes where the Teletubbies say 'Uh Oh!' when the voice trumpet says 'Time for Tubby Bye Bye'. Those episodes are Flamenco Guitar, Animals - Snails and Naughty Duck.
